about us
This collective is, above all, a story of friendship. It began with the chance encounter on the streets of five photographers. Five distinct individuals, each with their own personality, united only by their relationship to the image. What we present to you here is the modest outcome of that meeting. The photographs shown are those produced since 1995, the year the collective was formed. Some of the photographers have earlier work that has vanished, such as the case of Charles Thomas, who was tragically stabbed in the streets of Paris in April 1999.
His apartment was emptied, and all that remains are the negatives from 1995 onward—just four years of his work. The same goes for Ethan, whose New York archives disappeared following a painful separation. Others, like Hikaru, choose not to show the traces of a time they consider to be behind them, or Jana, who left Czechoslovakia and prefers not to display her early work... The majority of the photographers present here share work created on the streets of Paris.I had to insist, as the charter of the Chambre 5 collective requires its members to remain in the shadows and avoid exposing themselves.
